Compensated vs. Decompensated Cirrhosis

Compensated: Patients with cirrhosis that have not developed major complications of cirrhosis.

Decompensated: Patients with cirrhosis who have developed major complications:

  • Variceal hemorrhage
  • Ascites
  • Hepatic encephalopathy
  • Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Hepatorenal syndrome
